HOME THINKING BLUE SKY SKIES ABOUT REFERENCES |
HOME
What do we know of our contemporary sky? What do we we know of a sky that is both connected to and yet distinct from the skies that have come before? To begin to answer this question we might turn to the work of contemporary artists, writers and film-makers who take the sky as their subject. We may consider the impact of ozone depletion and modern day atmospheric studies. We may also start by addressing the radically new skies brought to us by the technology of our contemporary Space Age. But however, and wherever we begin, begin we must! Our contemporary sky has been too long neglected. Writing from within the discipline of contemporary aesthetics Thinking Blue Sky addresses the question of the sky today, identifying its defining features and exploring the way these make meaning within contemporary culture. In the course of this work Thinking Blue Sky (re)discovers something the Romantics knew well but we appear to have forgotten: careful study of the aesthetics of the sky has much to teach us, not least about ourselves and our contemporary lives.
